OpenAI is working on an early attempt at a standard for AI-facing interfaces and is looking for feedback from developers interested in building with them. Existing plugins from early collaborators are being gradually enabled for ChatGPT users, beginning with ChatGPT Plus subscribers. In the coming months, OpenAI plans to enable developers using OpenAI models to integrate plugins into their own applications beyond ChatGPT.
Plugin alpha access is currently being extended to users and developers from a waitlist. OpenAI plans to roll out larger-scale access over time. The plugins function as “eyes and ears” for language models, allowing them to access recent, personal, or specific information that might not be included in the training data. They can also enable language models to perform safe, constrained actions on behalf of the user.
While plugins offer many opportunities, they also introduce significant new risks. Safety and broader implications of connecting language models to external tools have been carefully considered in the development of the plugin platform, with several safeguards implemented to mitigate potential risks.
More to come. 🕵️♀️
